How to read numbers

I would like to know what is the principles of the numbers on gold and silver. Example on sterling silver lingot on the side a design + 73 P and 2202
Also is there a web site with references on how to understand marks and numbers on silver and gold.
Thank you

If it's sterling, chances are good that it's from the Franklin Mint or Danbury Mint. Based on that knowledge, my guess is that the numbers you posted refer to the year 1973 and either a design # or an inventory # [2202].

Comex bars like Johnson Mathey or Englehard have 'serial' numbers which are much longer than what you posted.
